The workshop is a 5-day online workshop (12,13,16,18,21 August 2021) delivered in English and opens for Architecture and Civil Engineering students from universities in Indonesia and abroad. The program comprises of lectures, discussions, group work, exhibition and final presentation at the DEACE International Conference. The workshop equals to a regular course of 3 credits (43 hours). Participants will be benefited from international exposure and received lectures from bamboo expertise and also tutors from architecture and civil engineering. Students will work in groups and propose a design problem by applying computational design for bamboo.


  • To introduce bamboo as a building material, especially for freeform architecture, and basic principle of gridshell structure.

  • To investigate form finding methods for gridshell structure using model.

  • To assess the construction process and joineries for gridshell bamboo by building a prototype.

  • To evaluate the structure stability and strength using model and prototype.


Bamboo, one of local materials in Indonesia, has been used as a building material for centuries by local people. Bamboo is a sustainable material due to its role in carbon sequester. It releases oxygen during the planting period, needs low labour in harvesting, and can be regrowth in a short period. The fast growth aspect makes bamboo is considered more sustainable than wood. The potential of bamboo as building material not only lies on sustainability but also on the mechanical properties and flexibility, thus bamboo is potential to be used for freeform architecture. However, to utilise bamboo needs knowledge and understanding on the characteristic and properties of bamboo.

Gridshell is one of shell structure that can be defined as basically a shell structure with holes, which the loads are concentrated to strips and gains its strength and stiffness through its double curvature configuration (Chilton & Tang, 2017; Harris, 2011). Gridshell structure is commonly using timber lath as the strips, e.g. Mannheim Gridshell, Downland Gridshell, Savill Garden Gridshell, or steel. Other materials have been used for gridshell structure, such as paper tube, and bamboo, but the buildings were only for temporary function.

Gridshell structure produces a shelter with long eaves which is suitable for the climate in Indonesia; while bamboo gives familiarity and identity as local architecture for the building. However, to utilise bamboo for gridshell structure need further study. Raw bamboo is round, hollow, uneven and tapered while mechanical properties of each bamboo are varied. To design a gridshell structure using raw bamboo need further understanding of the structure and bamboo.

This workshop aims to give knowledge of bamboo and gridshell structure through experimental study. Students/participant will gain knowledge through experience in lectures and workshops.

The minimum second year of undergraduate students preferably from Architecture or Civil Engineering major (postgraduate and professionals are also welcome)

Familiar with basic principles of Rhino and Grasshopper software and installed in their personal computers
